WASHINGTON EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL FINALE
Lon Cheney's riveting tale of love and betrayal, set in turbulent 15th century France, accompanied with a live score of French medieval music by Rosa Lamoreaux, soprano; Priscilla Smith, recorders, shawm & bagpipe; and Tina Chancey, vielle, kamenj, rebec & recorders.
A century ago, silent films were seldom silent. At Hollywood premieres large orchestras would perform newly-composed scores; at film palaces around the country organists would improvise with their eyes on the screen, or small ensembles would compile a soundtrack from published collections of movie music.
HESPERUS goes one step further;we create a score of period music from the time the film was set, not released, and we play it on original instruments.
