WIFV and the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media are pleased to present An Evening with Geena Davis.   For most of us, Ms. Davis embodies the characters she plays on screen.  For this evening, we have a chance to discuss those characters with her and to learn how the characterization of women in media has brought her to a very different interaction with media producers and audiences.  A Q&A with Ms. Davis will be followed by a screening of Thelma and Louise as a 20th anniversary celebration of the film's release.

In 2004, Davis founded the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, the only research-based organization working within the media and entertainment industry to engage, educate and influence the need for gender balance, reducing stereotyping and creating  wide variety of female characters in entertainment targeting children 11 and younger.

Davis serves on the Board of the White House Project, is an appointee to the California Commission on the Status of Women, is Co-Chair of the Girl Scouts of America Healthy MEdia Commission, serves on the Advisory Board for the Women and Girls Lead initiative of ITVS, and is an official partner of UN Women in their effort to change the way media represents women and girls worldwide.  She is a former trustee of the Women’s Sports Foundation.

The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media and its programming arm See Jane work with entertainment creators and companies, educate the next generation of content-creators, and inform the public about the need to increase the number of girls and women in media aimed at kids and to reduce stereotyping of both males and females.

WIFV supports women in the industry by promoting equal opportunities, encouraging professional development, serving as an information network, and educating the public about women’s creative and technical achievements .  Our resources, connections and advocates support a vibrant, creative media industry in the DC-Metro region.

DC Shorts showcases the largest audience-driven collection of short films in the USA.  For our 8th year, we are showing 145 films from 23 nations — and expect hundreds of filmmakers and thousands of audience members mix, mingle and explore the world of short cinema.

DC Shorts has been named by MovieMaker Magazine us as “one of 20 festivals worth an entry fee” (three years in a row) and “one of the leading film festivals” in the country. We have also been voted by Washington City Paper readers as a top area festival!

During the film competition weekend (September 8–10), will screen the films in 17 unique 90-minute showcases — all followed by Q&A sessions with the filmmakers.

After the competition weekend (September 11-18), we will re-screen all of the programs, plus remix films into specialty shows. The week culminates with the special “Best of DC Shorts” screenings on September 17 and 18 at the Atlas Performing Arts Center.

Explore the films using the Sorter — a visual way to read film descriptions, view trailers and see what others’ think about the movies.  Visit our Blog to get a behind-the-scenes look at the festival. And of course, purchase tickets before they sell out (they always do!)

And remember to buy a ticket for one of our HUGE parties — The Celebrity Bash at Madame Tussaud’s, the Brazilian Carnival at Artisphere and the Closing Bash at Atlas Arts Center.  Party tickets include open bar and delicious nibbles.
