In Left in the Midwest, 15 authors explore the roots of progressivism in the nation’s heartland. In her essay, Nina Gilden Seavey reveals the FBI’s infiltration and subversion of the anti-war movement in this in-depth companion piece to the My Fugitive podcast. The book is now available on Kindle and in paperback editions.

This webinar features Cathie Saadeh, an entertainment attorney. Independent films are typically funded through some combination of personal funds, grants, donations through a fiscal sponsor, equity investments, crowdfunding, in-kind contributions, and even product placement opportunities! This webinar will discuss how these pieces fit together, the options available to filmmakers, legal considerations when dealing with investors, and how the presence of multiple funding types can affect the film's distribution waterfall. The discussion will include a "filmmaker-friendly" discussion of the federal securities laws administered by the SEC, and the various exemptions that may be used to conduct an investment offering.

This summer, WIFV Film Club has enjoyed a fun and interesting series – "Summer Strangers." Since June we've discussed films that find its protagonists making a new friend — or foe — who will change their lives, often in disastrous ways.

We end our series with FALLEN, a 1998 supernatural thriller starring Denzel Washington. The film was directed by Gregory Hoblit (PRIMAL FEAR) from a screenplay by Nicholas Kazan. John Goodman, Donald Sutherland, Embeth Davidtz, and James Gandolfini also star.

Homicide detective John Hobbes (Washington) witnesses the execution of serial killer Edgar Reese. Soon after the execution, however, the killings start again in a similar style to Reese but committed by complete strangers. FALLEN sticks with viewers long after the credits roll because it pushes the boundaries of what true evil is or could be.

We will discuss the broader context of what fiscal sponsorship is, what it is not, and how to go about determining the fiscal sponsor who may be the best fit for your project and needs. We will also present information about the WIFV Fiscal Sponsorship Program and application requirements. The next application deadline is October 21.

This webinar will focus on the Entertainment Industries Council (EIC) resources about proper weapons terminology, media engagement, and how the entertainment industry can help reduce the appeal of certain weapons through prop substitution and creative storytelling, including crafting characters as the heroes, rather than their weapons. It's heating up outside and onscreen with WIFV Film Club's latest series: Summer Strangers. Each month, from June through September, we'll discuss a film that finds its protagonists making a new friend — or foe — who will change their lives, often in disastrous ways.

The August selection is COLLATERAL (2004) starring Jamie Foxx, Tom Cruise, and Jada Pinkett Smith. Directed by Michael Mann. A cab driver finds himself the hostage of an engaging contract killer as he makes his rounds from hit to hit during one night in Los Angeles.

The WIFV Film Club is open to all and is a great way to build connections with fellow members of the film community. You watch the film in advance and we meet on the third Monday of each month, from 7:30 – 8:30 pm ET.
